The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of Anesthesiology is seeking a fellowship-trained Obstetric Anesthesiologist dedicated to outstanding clinical care, education, and academic excellence. UNC Hospitals, located on the main UNC campus in Chapel Hill, NC, is a premier academic medical center providing comprehensive tertiary and quaternary care. Our main campus serves as a Level I Trauma Center, Level IV Maternal Care Center, and is home to a Level IV NICU.
The Division of Obstetric Anesthesia is a dynamic group of nine fellowship-trained faculty who provide care for a diverse and complex patient population. Our division supports an ACGME-accredited fellowship program with one fellow per year and participates actively in resident and medical student education.
UNC performs more than 4,400 deliveries annually, including a large proportion of high-risk maternal and fetal cases such as maternal cardiac disease, placenta accreta spectrum disorders, and a wide range of hematologic and neurologic conditions. We also care for patients with sickle cell disease and other complex comorbidities. Our team collaborates closely with Maternal-Fetal Medicine colleagues in managing advanced perinatal care, including a robust fetal surgery program performing procedures such as open neural tube defect repair, fetoscopic interventions for twin-twin transfusion syndrome, and other advanced fetal procedures. We seek to expand our team with a fellowship-trained anesthesiologist who shares our commitment to clinical excellence, innovative teaching, and multidisciplinary collaboration in the care of high-risk obstetric patients.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Requires a medical degree (MD, DO or equivalent). Must have completed an ACGME accredited Anesthesiology Residency program and be ABA certified or eligible. Completion of an ACGME accredited Obstetric Anesthesia Fellowship is required. Candidates must be eligible for licensure in North Carolina.

The Director will lead the specialized fetal anesthesia service of the Fetal Center at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital (CMHH), under the leadership of the Division Chief of Obstetric Anesthesia, working in close collaboration with the Fetal Center’s Co-Directors, the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, the Chief of Pediatric Anesthesia, and CMHH administration. This highly specialized role integrates direct clinical care with leadership in program development, research, and education.
Key Responsibilities: -Clinical Practice and Leadership -Provide anesthesia services for parturients as part of a combined obstetric and fetal anesthesia practice, including complex fetal procedures. -Lead the fetal anesthesia team (“Fetal Pod”), optimizing workflows, staffing models, and protocols, ensuring the highest standards of safety and outcomes. -Foster strong physician–care team–patient relationships and multidisciplinary collaboration with surgeons, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, neonatologists, and nursing staff. -Academic Development -Build a robust academic program focused on clinical and translational research in fetal anesthesia. -Support faculty scholarship by collaborating with the Vice Chairs of Research and Clinical Research. -Partner with residency and fellowship Program Directors to ensure exceptional educational experiences, including dedicated fetal anesthesia rotations. -Build the foundations for a fetal anesthesia fellowship. -Collaboration & Engagement -Actively participate in multidisciplinary case conferences, huddles, and morbidity & mortality reviews. -Contribute to preoperative evaluation, perioperative planning, and family-centered care discussions. -Serve as a visible leader, engaging trainees, faculty, and hospital leadership in advancing the mission of the Fetal Center. -Administration & Operations -Partner with departmental leadership to align fetal anesthesia services with institutional goals. -Assist with recruitment, retention, and development of faculty and providers within the fetal anesthesia service. -Collaborate with the Vice Chair of Finance and Operations to enhance practice efficiency and sustainability. -Ensure accurate scheduling, communication, and adherence to best practice standards.
Required Qualifications: •Medical degree (MD or DO). •Board certification in Anesthesiology. •Completion of an Obstetric Anesthesia fellowship with significant fetal anesthesia training. •Strong clinical expertise in anesthesia for complex fetal cases. •Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to lead in a multidisciplinary environment. •Evidence of academic productivity and commitment to advancing the field of fetal anesthesia.
Preferred Qualifications: •Dual fellowship training in Pediatric Anesthesia. •Prior experience in a specialized fetal anesthesia program or setting. •Prior leadership experience. •Academic title or experience commensurate with Associate Professor or Professor.

We provide care to a culturally diverse and medically challenging population across two ACOG Level 4 centers: North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Both sites are recognized as SOAP Centers of Excellence.
North Shore University Hospital (NSUH): Located on the north shore of Long Island with easy access to Manhattan. The North Shore of Long Island boasts beautiful residential communities and world class school districts. NSUH manages ~6000 deliveries/year. This center specializes in maternal cardiac care and the management of pregnancies complicated by PAS.
Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC): Located in New York City, this campus offers access to diverse cultural experiences. LIJMC manages nearly 8000 deliveries annually, excelling in the management of complex cases including PAS and deliveries complicated by fetal anomalies. This center is adjacent to the renowned Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center.
NSUH and LIJMC are the main teaching hubs of the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University. Both serve as the clinical sites of our expanding anesthesiology residency and fellowship programs.
